Battle against tumours: new cancer treatment on the way…
It’s a deadly disease which has taken the lives of millions. Even to this day, thousands and thousands worldwide succumb to it every year. As if that’s not bad enough, it comes in many different forms. Guys, this is cancer we’re talking about! There has been endless research into cancer and tumour therapies. However, in this post, you’ll be learning about a new cancer treatment drug. It has shown its effectiveness against several different types of cancer. Even those which are known to be very stubborn. That’s probably what makes it so unique. If you want to know more, just stay on this page!!
Testing out the new cancer drug
This new cancer treatment was a result of ongoing study here in the UK. Curing cancer is nothing new at all. There are actually a variety of cancer treatments readily available. Rather, the aim was to develop a drug that could work against very “difficult” cancer cases. For some of the toughest cases around, the patients could be out of luck completely. That’s exactly where this fits in nicely. The drug is code-named ‘TV’ and works differently from other treatments. In order to assess its effectiveness, the team gave the drug to nearly 150 cancer patients. They administered the drug intravenously every 2-3 weeks. Now the test patients all had various advanced forms of cancer. This included cancer of the bladder, uterus, cervix, lungs, oesophagus and ovaries. Most were so serious that normal treatments couldn’t alleviate symptoms.
Up until this trial, there seemed to be absolutely no hope left. However, a remarkable number of patients responded positively to TV treatment. There was either a reduction in tumour size or complete arrest of tumour growth. No matter how you look at it, this drug had proved its value. As if that wasn’t enough, TV even continued working long after the trial. Some patients continued to benefit up to 9 months after the initial treatment course!
Explaining how it works
This new cancer treatment works in a different way from other existing treatments. It effectively goes in and destroys tumours from the inside. This is powerful because it leaves the tumour virtually no chance of recovery. TV consists of a lethal chemical agent bound to an antibody. Most cancer cells contain certain receptors on their surface. TV attaches itself to one of the most prevalent cancer cell receptors. By this process, the drug is able to get into the malignant tumour cell directly. Although the drug works, there are some minor side effects. This includes things like dry eyes, fatigue etc which are all manageable.
Despite all the above, there is more work to do. This new cancer treatment must undergo further scrutiny and testing. They also need to look for other potential drawbacks as well. Some might even take years to manifest, but it’s still important. On top of this, they will also need to test it on other cancer types. But for medical research, this is another inch of progress. At least for cancer anyway. It’s important that we find new ways to combat existing diseases. Especially when they’ve proved difficult enough to deal with in the first place.
